When should you replace the timing components?
The main rule
Intervals vary by manufacturer - always follow the service manual. If you don't know when the timing components were last replaced, we recommend a preventive replacement.
Timing Belt
Interval: 100,000 – 200,000 km or 5–10 years (whichever comes first)
Most manufacturers recommend 120,000–150,000 km. A timing belt is rubber, quiet, and cheaper to replace, but has a shorter lifespan. There are no warning signs. One day it simply snaps.
Timing Chain
Designed for the engine's lifetime: 200,000+ km
However, modern chains can stretch sooner than expected. A metal chain is usually more durable, but more expensive to replace. You'll notice it through rattling when cold and error codes.
How to spot timing system problems
Especially when cold after starting. May indicate a stretched chain or worn tensioner.
Error codes P0016–P0019 point to a timing system problem.
The engine feels weaker than usual, with reduced throttle response.
A stretched chain or skipped belt shifts the timing - the engine starts poorly or runs unevenly.
When the timing is off, the engine burns more fuel than necessary. You'll notice it at the pump.

How do I know it's time to replace the timing belt?
Follow the interval in your service manual. A belt snaps suddenly with no warning whatsoever. For chains, listen for rattling when cold after starting and watch for the check engine light.
What happens if the belt snaps?
The pistons hit the valves and destroy the engine. Repairs cost €2,054 – €6,161, and it is often more economical to replace the entire engine. Preventive timing component replacement is far cheaper.
What's the difference between a belt and a chain?
A belt is rubber, quiet, cheaper to replace, but has a shorter lifespan (60,000–160,000 km). A chain is metal, more durable (200,000+ km), but more expensive to replace.
How long does the replacement take?
Timing belt or chain replacement is done by appointment. Once you drop off the car, it is usually ready by the next day.
Is it worth replacing the water pump at the same time?
Absolutely. The water pump is driven by the timing belt - when the timing system is opened up, replacing the pump adds minimal cost and prevents another expensive repair down the road.
